Do you seek advice?

Leadership Begins with Humility

There is a saying that explains that some of the best teachers are the best learners.  What do you think this means?  The only way to lead is to learn from others.  Gaining multiple perspectives is the foundation of good leadership.

For lack of guidance a nation falls, but victory is won through many advisers.

Proverbs 11:14

How well do you take input from others?

15 The way of fools seems right to them,     but the wise listen to advice.

Proverbs 12:15 (NIV)

Pride is one of the biggest hurdles in the way of getting advice.  What are areas you seek after others’ advice?  What areas are you resist getting advice? (i.e. finances, marriage, school, schedule, dating, family, etc.)

Advice Leads to Success

Get advice if you want your plans to work. If you go to war, get the advice of others

Proverbs 20:18 (NCV)

Do you make many plans?  Do you believe that if you get the advice from others, your plans will be even more likely to succeed?  What stops you from getting advice?

Listen to advice and accept discipline, and at the end you will be counted among the wise

Proverbs 19:20 (NIV)

Sometimes advice does not always feel good.  Do you stop and listen to why you are receiving that advice or do you blow it off and continue on with your own plans?  Without heeding advice and allowing others to influence you, it will be difficult to gain wisdom.  Wisdom leads to further perspectives and insight that can help you direct and lead others.

Who are you trying to lead?  What can the bible and friends teach you so you can lead better?  The same scripture in another version says the following…

Get all the advice and instruction you can,     so you will be wise the rest of your life

Proverbs 19:20 (NLT)

Do you limit the advice you get? Do you only ask certain people for advice?  Ask yourself why.  Seeking advice is not designated for a certain time or circumstance in your life.  When you live by the bible, God expects your life to be used to please him.  In order to be a good leader you must embrace advice.
