Inside each one of us is a desire to do good and to leave the world better off than we came into it. God has put that desire inside us. We are all meant to make a difference.

Do not withhold good from those who deserve it when it’s in your power to help them.

Proverbs 3:27 NLT

One of the most inspiring aspects of our church is its impact on the community around us. USF E-Hoops and the “Above the Rim” Summer Basketball League have both been shining lights in the Bay Area of the power of good and the power of God.

USF E-Hoops

The University of San Francisco hosted an E-Hoops program on campus for the first time in the fall of 2014, teaming up volunteer coaches with children, both with and without special needs. Student athletes from USF and others volunteered on Sundays to teach basketball basics to local kids, many of whom had never played the sport before. The following is an excerpt from the San Francisco Examiner regarding E-Hoops.

Nine-year-old Bennett Wilsey hurled a basketball into the air toward a hoop in the University of San Francisco’s War Memorial Gymnasium… The ball bounced off the backboard and dropped into the net. “I got my first basket!” the San Francisco boy joyfully exclaimed… “Yeah! Way to go, Bennett!” his father cheered. “Good shot, buddy.”

Bennett turned back to the other children and coaches—mostly players from the USF men’s and women’s basketball teams—participating in the final E-Hoops session of the year and continued to practice dribbling and passing. “I’d never seen him make a basket and now he’s making baskets regularly,” (the father) said of his son, who is on the autism spectrum. “He’s doing a lot better passing… and catching the ball… socializing and talking to people.”

“Above the Rim” Summer Basketball League

Our annual summer league has become one of the Bay Area’s premier men’s basketball leagues while also hosting a middle school division. Drawing talent form around the Bay Area, including current and former NCAA players, the league provides men an opportunity to build close relationships while competing in a highly competitive, positive, and collaborative environment.

The Power of Good

Our annual Special Contribution is coming up, and this is ultimately a fundraiser for doing good. What our church is doing makes an incredible impact on our communities, and our collective giving fuels that impact in a major way.
