UPDATE: Supporting Houston’s Special Needs Families

The Autism Society of Texas is doing heroic work supporting Houston’s special needs families – but they can’t do it alone. That’s why we donated $2500 to help them meet the needs of the special needs families affected by Hurricane Harvey and just yesterday we sent them 45 sets of noise-canceling headphones to help provide for those in shelters with special needs.

Out of concern for Houston’s special needs families, we reached out to Suzanne Potts, executive director of the Autism Society of Texas to find out how they were doing and how we could help. With more than 32,000 people in Houston’s shelters, the Autism Society was on the front lines helping special needs families navigate their disrupted lives.

“A shelter environment creates sensory overload for children with special needs. Many of the children are in sensory shock,” explained Potts.

In addition to providing for these families’ physical needs, the Autism Society is working to bring people in to help children while their parents stand in lines and fill out paperwork for much-needed assistance from FEMA.

We are inspired by the courageous work of so many people in Houston and are grateful to be able to support them in any way we can.

If you are interested in helping, please visit the Autism Society’s website or donate to the BACC Doing Good Fund.
