Only God Can Satisfy

My victory and honor come from God alone. He is my refuge, a rock where no enemy can reach me.

Psalm 62:7

It’s easy to hear the words “God Alone” and think of all the things we have to give up in order to get there. What we miss is that God is the one that provides every good thing in our life. We all make something or someone our God; it could be a boyfriend, girlfriend, a hobby, parents, friends, or something you really want in life. We chase after these things in hopes that they will satisfy us and make us happy or victorious like this Scripture references. We go to these things to meet different needs in our life that only God can satisfy. Will you choose God or your idol?

What are you after?

“When Rachel saw that she was not having children for Jacob, she envied her sister Leah. She said to Jacob, “Give me children, or I’ll die!” 2 Jacob became angry with her and said, “Can I do what only God can do? He is the one who has kept you from having children.”

Genesis 30:1-2

Rachel was desperate to feel love. Rachel wanted kids because that was the best thing she felt she could have back then, because it validated that God loved her, so what Rachel really wanted was to be validated that she was loved.

Identify what are the wants and desires in your life? Why do you want those things? How have you responded to these desires?

Rachel got envious of people who had what she wanted. Like Rachel, our wants and desires tell us what we really value and need in life (to feel loved, to be happy, to feel confident, etc). Rachel’s problem wasn’t her need for love; her problem was that she thought having children would satisfy that need. She didn’t believe that God could meet those needs. Jacob saw that only God can satisfy her.

What’s your attitude towards your needs? What do you turn to when you don’t get what you want? (envy, anger, etc.)

God Can Do It

“And human hands can’t serve his needs—for he has no needs. He himself gives life and breath to everything, and he satisfies every need.”

Acts 17:25

This was the attitude that Jacob had about God. He believed God was enough to satisfy each of his needs.

What do you believe about God? Do you believe that God has your back and will provide you with what you really want?

Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you your heart’s desires.

Psalm 37:4

God wants to give us what we truly want; we just have to put him first and trust him to do it.

Prayer Challenge: Tell God what you want and need, pray through the desire that you want and to ask God to change the desires that aren’t for him.
