4 Amazing Attributes Of God

It’s easy for us to go through the motions of doing a lot of Bible studies without having a real understanding of who’s speaking–God! Here are a few Scriptures that give us an understanding of some amazing attributes of God.

God is…

My Rock

The Lord is my rock, my protection, my Savior. My God is my rock. I can run to him for safety. He is my shield and my saving strength, my defender.

For who is God besides the Lord? And who is the Rock except our God? It is God who arms me with strength and keeps my way secure. He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; he causes me to stand on the heights.

Psalm 18:2, 31-33

Rocks have multiple purposes; they are use to hide from danger and take cover as a shelter. They help as an anchor in the midst of a storm or for building a structure. When God is our rock he is our foundation, support, cornerstone, defense, and protection. This passage describes how God can play these roles in our lives. We learn to rely on God by trusting he will be there for us in these ways.

What situation have you been in recently where you could have relied on God as your rock? Who or what did you rely on instead?

Making the choice to rely on God during these times trains our hearts to turn to God for help.

My Strength

Sing to the one who rides through the skies, which are from long ago. He speaks with a thundering voice.  Announce that God is powerful. He rules over Israel, and his power is in the skies. God, you are wonderful in your Temple. The God of Israel gives his people strength and power.

Psalms 68:33-35

God is powerful! His thundering voice speaks to us through his word. We must get rid of any traditional view we have of God being an old man in the sky that is distant and detached. His power is evident in all that he does. He does not want to harness all that power for himself. He give his people strength and power. God is willing to give us whatever we need to do all things.

My Help

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day.

Psalms 46:1-5

God is always present when we need him. He is there for us during the times that we are the most afraid, insecure, or worried. What we go through may seem like an impossible situation, but even then God is our support.

Do you expect, look, and hope for God’s help? Do you trust he will help you?

My God

Exalt the Lord our God and worship at his footstool; he is holy. Moses and Aaron were among his priests, Samuel was among those who called on his name; they called on the Lord and he answered them. He spoke to them from the pillar of cloud; they kept his statutes and the decrees he gave them. Lord our God, you answered them; you were to Israel a forgiving God, though you punished their misdeeds.  Exalt the Lord our God and worship at his holy mountain, for the Lord our God is holy.

Psalms 99:5-9

If we call out to God, he will answer. Sometimes those answers come indirectly; we must pay careful attention. Obeying his word draws us close to him. His faithfulness and forgiving heart keeps him close to us. He is amazing and worthy to be honored.

Challenge:

Find scriptures that depict the amazing attributes of God. When you pray each day, take time to recognize his qualities. Pray about the personal ways you need him in your life.
